3 Reasons Why Children Need Annual Eye Exams

Jan 16, 2023

In the U.S., an estimated 6.8% of children under 18 have been diagnosed with both vision and eye conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Vision issues can lead to problems at school and at home. Let's take a closer look at a few of the reasons why it's so important for your child to undergo annual eye exams.

1. Many Children Are Visual Learners

Visual learning is a major component of elementary education, and some children are predominantly visual learners. Without good vision, these children can easily fall behind. Once a child feels like they can't keep up with their peers, their education and social lives can suffer. Something as simple as not being able to see the classroom board can discourage a child. Education and enjoying good vision go hand in hand, and annual eye exams can help parents catch vision problems quickly.

2. Annual Exams Can Detect Vision Problems as They Develop

According to the Optometrist Network, annual exams should begin around the time your child is six months old. Between the ages of two and five, they should be seen at least once unless there are other problems that need to be addressed. Once a child begins school, an annual eye exam is necessary. Yearly exams can help to detect any vision problems that might be developing. Like so many other health issues, the sooner a vision problem is identified and corrected, the better.

3. Young Children Can't Always Explain the Problems They're Having

Young children often find it hard to articulate how they're feeling or what they're experiencing. If they feel frustrated at school because they can't keep up, they might not be able to tell their parents how they feel. This situation can cause a child to act out and begin to experience behavioral difficulties. Everyone wants their children to thrive, and part of ensuring that they get the most out of their early education is a yearly eye exam. If your child is acting out of sorts, or you're noticing negative changes in their daily behavior, it's time to schedule an eye exam for them.
