What Are Scleral Lenses?
Scleral lenses are custom, large diameter, lenses that completely cover the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye. Unlike soft contact lenses and conventional rigid gas permeable lenses, scleral lenses do not touch the cornea. This space between the lens and cornea acts like a prosthetic cornea for people with irregular corneas. This is unique to scleral lenses and they are generally more comfortable than rigid gas permeable lenses because they do not touch the corneal surface.
Who Can Benefit From Scleral Lenses?
Patients with irregular corneas, severe dry eye/tear film issues, and patients with refractive errors that cannot be sufficiently managed with other forms of correction. Some conditions in which patients may benefit from a scleral lens include:
- Keratoconus
- Scarred Corneas
- Severe Dry Eye/ Sjogrens
- Neurotrophic Keratopathy
- Post- LASIK Ectasia
- Post- Radial Keratotomy
- Neovacularized Corneas
