Learn More About Pink Eye
The condition often referred to as pink eye is quite often used incorrectly. Although many people first think of pink eye as a bacterial infection, in the optometric world, this condition is synonymous with conjunctivitis. Bacterial infections are more prevalent in children and are rare in adults. They also are infectious too, and children should be withheld from school or daycare. These infections are easily cleared up with antibiotic drops and resolve fairly quickly.
Conjunctivitis is an umbrella term used to describe the conjunctiva (white part of the eye) that is injected (reddish in color) and inflamed. Inflammation that causes irritation can arise from numerous sources. Allergies, viruses, contact lens abuse are a few examples that can cause conjunctivitis. These conditions are treated with different topical drops and sometimes systemically via the use of oral medication.
Pink eye is another term for conjunctivitis and is often used by the general public to describe a bacterial infection. Conjunctivitis is a more common condition than a bacterial infection, but both are easily treated with drops.
